Books

If you are interested in reading more on the subject of the Parthenon (Elgin) Marbles, we highly recommend the following books:

THE ELGIN MARBLES:
Should they be returned to Greece?

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS, 1997

Controversial and well known author Christopher Hitchen's book is one of the most complete single tomes on the subject. It is thorough, well researched and cleverly argued, recounting the history of these precious sculptures and making the case for their return to Greece. It aims to draw out the artistic, moral, legal and political perspectives of the argument.

Don't miss the  latest edition of this book 'The Parthenon Marbles, the Case for Reunification'. This third edition opens with a new and powerful preface by Nobel Prize winner Nadine Gordimer. Christopher Hitchens has also added a thought provoking introduction.

LORD ELGIN AND THE MARBLES
WILLIAM St Clair, 1998

Based on a detailed study of both original records and recent discoveries, this text offers an historical account of the extraordinary circumstances in which the Elgin Marbles were acquired, of the tremendous impact which they made on modern appreciation of Greek art, and of the bitter reaction of Napoleon, Byron, and many others. Further, it is widely accepted as the definitive work on 'the cleaning' of the Marbles. William St. Clair is a fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge."

THE RETURN OF CULTURAL TREASURES
DR JEANETTE GREENFIELD, 1996 (2nd Ed.)

In this important and pioneering work, Jeanette Greenfield analyses and discusses the historical, legal and political issues surrounding a wide cross-section of cases. This second edition brings the story up to date, with new material on art treasures and museums in Russia after the break-up of the Soviet Union, the claims to the Vatican of the Hebrew Manuscripts, and the saga of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

THINKING ABOUT THE ELGIN MARBLES
JOHN MERRYMAN, 2000

This book begins with a critical re-examination of the rival Greek and British claims to the Elgin Marbles. The case study identifies the questions that still dominate the growing international debate about cultural property policy and are explored in subsequent essays. The author examines in particular the law and policy relating to cultural property export controls and the evolution and development of the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on the Return of Stolen and Illegally Exported Cultural Property.

This book does not support the aims of the British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles. However, we feel it is important to provide a counter view.
