About the Exhibition

This compact, but visually dramatic photographic exhibition sketches the story of the Parthenon, a great work of architecture that is also a great work of art; its significance as a symbol of democracy and of a nation.

Large sculpturd parts of the moment were removed to Britain. These are the 'Elgin' Marbles, and the exhibition describes the circumstances in which they were cquired and makes the case for their return. The exhibition also shows the work currently in progress to conserve the Parthenon and the new museum that is designed to show the sculptures in relationship to the building itself.

Originally launched during 'Greece in Britain', a nationwide series of events illustrating the wealth and diversity of contemporary Greek culture presented on the occasion of the UK Presidency of the European Union, January - Jun 1998.


Technical Information

The exhibition consists of two stands and a tower, each lit by spotlights. Each stand is 2.8m wide and comprises eight graphic panels. The tower is three-sided, each side 70cm wide, and comprises 6 graphic panels with shelves to hold leaflets. The height of the exhibition in 2m. Panels are fixed into the system. 30-40 captioned photographs supported by a brief text tell the story onf the Marbles. Leaflets accompany the exhibition whichis aimed at the general public.

The exhibition is flexible and adaptable to most spaces. Depending on the layout a minimum area of 8m x 4m with a height of 3m is required to show it successfully. The exhibition is easily erected and dismounted.

The exhibition is packed in 3 cases, each 105x75x35cm and a fourth case 105x35x15cm. The whole case exhibition weighs 80 kg.

Hire of the exhibition is free. However, the exhibitor will have to pay transport, insurance, and fees for any leaflets supplied.
